Ford Mustang with French filmmaker Claude Lelouch shot a movie in VR, the “Re-Rendez-Vous” to celebrate 40thanniversary of the original C’était un Rendez-Vous
It was just before dawn one summer morning in Paris in 1976 when the French notorious filmmaker took out his screaming Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9 with a camera mounted on his front bumper, tearing streets and waking up the of Parisians The beauty of that 8 minutes epic film was a single shot unedited run hitting almost 230kmh and disregarding the regulations. Also notable were the Selective Yellow headlights used mostly in France. Cross past the Sacré Cœur Basilica the car stops at Montmartre where the driver comes out of his car to meet his girlfriend.
Interestingly the only thing that was added later was the soundtrack from recorded from Claude Lelouch’s own Ferrari 275 to add zing to the sea- of-the-pant experience.
Fast forward to the present day. Ford in partnership with Claude Lelouch recreated Rendezvous by using a bright red 2016 Ford Mustang GT. This new film is only one and half minutes long and there were many cuts and retakes were visible. However, the best part is the movie is made in VR which means you need to have the Oculus Rift headgear to experience the new heights.
Why now & why Claude Lelouch?
Lelouch achieved Oscar success for the 1966 movie “A Man and a Woman”, in which the main character drove a white Mustang in the Monte Carlo rally.
“I had goose bumps watching ‘C’etait un Rendez-Vous’ forty years later in virtual reality. At the time, my movie was about the feeling of freedom and the pleasure driving generates,” Lelouch said. “I knew that Ford would do more than just a tribute to the original in this new version. I am delighted to see the Mustang again and to close the loop fifty years after ‘A Man and a Woman’”.
Challenges & Whats next?
Times have changed, Today there’s even a regulation for smoking a cigarette in a public place and let alone denying the traffic rules or closing down the city center must’ve been a herculean task. Blue Oval did put up a disclaimer at the beginning of the film. Hence you will see most signals were green rather than red and Lelouch rebelling through the streets. Perfectly recreating the main aspects of the route was a challenge. Some roads have long since disappeared. There were many jumps in the video at one point the mustang was in the higher gear and you can hear the climbing Rpm. The situation is reversed this time, instead of the driver being a guy, a girl hops out of the mustang to meet her boyfriend!
The Re-Rendez-Vous is due for release later this month, “Re-Rendez-Vous” will first air online and can be viewed in 360 on mobile devices or using a virtual reality headset. There are plans for the film to be shown online via an expandable banner – a virtual reality first.
Considering the monster marketing budget these days and the power of Hollywood in the filmmaking showing endless car chases. who can forget the epic car chase in Ronin? I certainly feel the cowboy had a hit-‘n-miss!
By the way, do you guys have a getaway ( or imaginary) route in your respective city? do comment below and what car would you prefer to drive? For me, I would definitely prefer a Mustang or perhaps a Ford Focus RS would be a safe bet.
